a rightly timed pause

i like to sit on my fire escape and watch birds fly around in the canyon that is the empty space between apartment buildings.
one thing i’ve noticed is that pigeons look at you sideways.  instead of having two eyes facing forward like we do, their eyes lie on opposite sides of their heads, giving them a 340 degree field of view. nearly complete.
and i wonder what it would be like to experience that.  to see everything around you and have the freedom to move in all 3 dimensions. surfing on the wind.  using gravity as a slingshot.
which then lead me to think that:
the occipital lobe (the part of the brain where vision is processed) is located on the back of the brain, and
implants/prosthetics that feed visual information directly into the occipital lobe should be technologically feasible within 20 years.
an invention like this would dramatically change the world.  imagine if everyone could see everything around them at all times.
